M.C. Townsend, President /CEO Regional Black Chamber of Commerce

In just six years, the Regional Black Chamber of Commerce San Fernando Valley has become one of the most active and visible vehicles for economic empowerment for its members. When important business-related issues are raised or events occur that will contribute to the success of our members, we will most assuredly have a presence.

Turning contacts into contracts is one of the mottos of the Regional Black Chamber of Commerce San Fernando Valley. Indeed, the success of members is foremost among our goals.

The mission of the Regional Black Chamber of Commerce San Fernando Valley is to capitalize on its location in the second largest metropolitan area in the nation and bring our nearly 300 member recognition and access to the opportunities that abound. From the beginning our approach has been multi-pronged: to increase member visibility, access to capital, networking and marketing.

Members of the chamber can often be found at events like the Greater Los Angeles Vendor Fair and the Greenling Institute’s 13th Annual Economic Summit. Next week, many of our entrepreneurs will be on hand for the California Small Business Day in Sacramento. Delegates from the chamber will work to establish relations with state legislators and corporate leaders, in addition to continuing to cultivate alliances with local our local leaders.

The chamber also hosts business mixers and awards dinners. We have created an education, political advocacy and international trade committees to further extend the reach of the organization.

In recognition of our excellence, the Regional Black Chamber of Commerce San Fernando Valley was named chamber of the year by the California Black Chamber of Commerce in 2004.

Our chamber was founded by seven entrepreneurs who sought greater representation of minority, women and small businesses in the San Fernando Valley, a mostly suburban but economically vibrant section of Los Angeles County. The area is home to The Walt Disney Company, Universal Studios, and California State University Northridge, in addition to being a hub for hi-tech businesses. The chamber also represents business owners in other areas of the county including the Santa Clarita Valley, the city of Glendale, Inglewood and sections of the city of Los Angeles. We are based in Encino. From beauty salons to florists to manufacturers to IT professionals to attorneys to realtors, the chamber’s membership is diverse. Every corporation should be doing business with us.

THE Regional Black Chamber of Commerce’s valuable members and supporters came out again in record numbers to support the 3rd Annual Small Business Awards Dinner & Dance on November 9, 2007, hosted at the famed Marina Del Rey Hotel, located on admiralty way in the Marina. The Keynote speaker was the newest PUC Commissioner..Timothy Simon. His deliverance was right on point, echoed by many of the small businesses present that evening. Procurements & Contracts, access to capital were some of the key issues noted in his message, staying in focus  with the Regional Black Chamber’s theme:

     Educate, Entertain & Earn

The Commissioner offered words of encouragement to all business owners and others at the event, noting there are plenty opportunities out there, you simply need to “reposition” yourself and go after them. Being a member of a Chamber of Commerce is a good start for such resources of repositioning. Without a doubt his message and his passion for the growth of small businesses was quite clear.
